Madrid / The Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise is granted for the service provided to Spain in different areas and the Encomienda de la Orden Isabel La Católica for contributing to strengthen ties with Ibero-American countries: María Dolores Pradera (1924-2018) was in possession of both.
The singer died in Madrid, her hometown, on the early morning on May 29, three months before being 94 years old, and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia put in a social network an “emotional goodbye” to which they described a “Great lady of the song” and “bridge between cultures”, “in love with Ibero-American music”.
María Dolores Pradera is recognized, as “great dame” and “great lady” of the song in Spanish, for her discreet and elegant public presence, her talent, and personality and character printed in unique performances of rancheras, boleros, sambas, fados, coplas or ballads with a voice, also unique, that sought her success and international fame.
The work by Chabuca, Horacio Guarani, Mercedes Sosa, Sanchez Ferlosio, Amancio Prada, Atahualpa Yupanqui or Carlos Cano was very present in his long musical career, much of it linked to the Sabandeños or accompanied by the guitar of Los Gemelos.
Among the successes of this Spanish woman who before the public was announced as Mexican, Argentine or Peruvian, depending on the place she visited, there are “Amarraditos”, “La flor de la canela”, “El rosario”, “Que te vaya bonito” or “Caballo prieto azabache”.
Grammy for Artistic Excellence
María Dolores Pradera did not get off the stage until she was 90 years old and she accumulated an artistic career of almost 70 years and 40 albums (the first one was released the public in 1960), she won numerous awards and distinctions, among them a Grammy for Artistic Excellence by her entire professional career in 2008.
María Dolores Pradera played duo songs with different artists of different generations and recorded her last duets in “Gracias a Vosotros” (2012 and 2013) with Pablo Alborán, Miguel Poveda, Joaquín Sabina, Estrella Morente, Joan Manuel Serrat, Raphael, Enrique Bunbury, Rosana or José Mercé, among others.
She was married to the actor Fernando Fernán Gómez for twelve years and with him she had two children, Elena and Fernando and she preferred being loved than being admired “a thousand times”, as she said in the tribute that her admirers gave her at Instituto Cervantes and at the Ibero-American Theater Festival of Cádiz in 2011.
Honorary member of the Ibero-American Forum of the Arts, she got 30 gold discs, the Gold Medal of the Fine Arts, the Madrid Medal for Artistic Merit and the National Theater Award.
The singer began her artistic career in film in 1941 as an extra in the film “Porque te vi llorar”, although she also performed in theater with versions of “La Celestina”, “María Pineda” or “Fortunata y Jacinta”.
Light skin and eyes, once she told that as a child she wanted to be “gypsy”, “as others wanted to be engineers”, because she liked “dark circles and black hair” and that was origin of her taste for the flamenco and flamencos.
In this life, María Dolores Pradera spent “better” than “worse”, according to her own words, because she had met “extraordinary” people like Atahualpa Yupanqui, José Alfredo Jiménez, Lola Beltrán or Lola Flores, and because she had infinite pride of having always been a good friend to her friends.
