FELIPE VI ADVOCATES FOR A PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISM AGAINST FAKE NEWS IN THE CEREMONY OF THE PREMIOS REY DE ESPAÑA

Madrid / Today, the King of Spain, Felipe VI, has warned that faced with the challenge of “fake news”, it is “more necessary than ever” a “professional, independent” journalism, inspired by “ethical values”, which unfolds its ” authentic social responsibility “, which contrasts your information and verifies your sources.

Felipe VI has presided over the award ceremony of the Premios Internacionales de Periodismo Rey de España and Premio Don Quijote, which in this edition distinguish Fernando Aramburu, the newspaper El País and professionals from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, Cuba, Portugal and Spain.

“The winners are an example of truthful journalism and quality at a time when this profession is subject to new demands and challenges arising from the immediacy and interactivity of communication,” he stressed, before warning about “the generation and the exponential spread in real time of fake news “that threaten” the right of citizens to receive accurate and truthful information”.

Mr. Felipe, who has dedicated a memory “very meaningful and saddeness” deceased to the late Spanish journalist Pedro Erquicia, has underlined the need to promote “the best journalism”, which seeks “truth in freedom” with “objective, transparent information, verified and of quality, and an attitude of commitment to democracy, human rights, public liberties and equal opportunities “.

Felipe VI has encouraged all journalists to “not be intimidated by difficulties” and to exercise their profession with “courage, courage and dedication to service.”
