FELIPE VI DEFENDS CONSTITUTIONAL IN A SPAIN OPENED TO CHANGES

Madrid / The King Felipe VI claimed the “full validity” of the ideals enshrined in the Constitution, without distorting them and without “suppressing territorial diversity”, although he encouraged to adapt the current “way of doing” to “a Spain open to change”, with a “critical but always constructive” spirit.

Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, accompanied by Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, as well as by King Juan Carlos with Mrs. Sofía (unlike what happened last year when the forty years of the first democratic elections were held) attended in the Congress to the solemn session commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Constitution, in a ceremony in which the president of this chamber was the hostess.

In the speech delivered from the rostrum of speakers, Mr. Felipe affirmed that “democracy is firmly and fully consolidated” in Spain.

The Spanish king defended the “territorial structure” protected by the Magna Carta, for having consolidated the most “deep decentralization of political power” in the History of Spain, with a “recognition and protection of our languages, traditions, cultures and institutions”, he said.

A SPAIN OPENED TO CHANGES

In any case, Spain today is “very different from that of December 6, 1978” and “throughout all these years there have been mistakes, errors and insufficiencies in our country,” said the head of state, who has warned of the need to “continue building”, from the respective responsibilities of each one, “a Spain in the vanguard, modern and renewed”.

“A Spain opened to the changes that our society and, especially, the young generations deserve”, the monarch continued, before vindicating the validity of ideals and values such as “the vocation of integration, respecting our differences and our diversity”, that this vocation “doesn’t suppose uniformity or deny plurality”.

In his long speech, full of quotations and praise to the speakers of the Constitution, Mr. Felipe, who has ended with a “thank you” in the different co-official languages, has also praised his parents for the role played in the process of democratization, moment in which Mr. Juan Carlos has received, together with Mrs. Sofía, visibly moved, the ovation of the hemicycle.

For his part, Pastor has appealed to the “prudence” and “wisdom” of the constituents, because, she warned, no Constitution should be reformed “with less agreement from the one who created it”, and she has proclaimed: “Today is the time to that all Spaniards renew this Grand Constitutional Pact. It is what the Spanish people demand their representatives. “

The three constitutional speakers and the former presidents of the Government Felipe González, José María Aznar, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy shared with the King Juan Carlos and the Queen Sofía the place of honour reserved for them in the centre of the Chamber during this ceremony, at the who has attended the entire Executive except the Minister Reyes Maroto, as well as 11 regional leaders.
