Felipe VI highlights Spanish language unites diversity and cancels differences

Alcala de Henares (Madrid) / On Tuesday, Felipe VI has awarded the Cervantes 2018 prize to the Uruguayan poet Ida Vitale, in an act in which he has extolled the value of the Spanish language and culture as a manifestation of unity in diversity and has assured that the universality of this language cancels differences.

The King has presided over the award ceremony with Queen Letizia and reviewed the biography and career of the award-winning, he has paid tribute to the recently deceased writer Rafael Sanchez Ferlosio, and he has reminded the victims of the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka Lanka (including two Spaniards).

For the King, “the desire for universality” of Castilian, about which he has recalled that “577 million people from different countries and climates are expressed, separated and at the same time joined by vast oceans or mountain ranges, cancels the differences”. It is, in his opinion, a universality that makes all “members of a large family”.

In his references to Ida Vitale, he pointed out the exchange, mutual respect and plural access to knowledge of her youthful years in Uruguay are an example of how the Ibero-American space was created and consolidated as an own and unique area whose identity it is rooted in the language and in “a culture of solidarity cultures”.

He stressed the boom it has lived to make Spanish the second language of international communication thanks to the efforts of many institutions to spread it.

Efforts which continue and he thinks these make Spanish a “lively, vivacious” language which is in good health.

The King, who also recalled that the 95-year-old Uruguayan poet had to go into exile in Mexico (“always a solidary nation”), has described her work as “exact and magical”.

“We greet our jovial and exemplary vital poet,” he added at another point in his speech, in which he has considered Vitale’s poetry as a “green branch” in which springs from the tree of Ibero-American civilization. (April 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
