FELIPE VI SAYS IN DAVOS THAT THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION IS NOT A DECORATIVE OBJECT

Davos (Switzerland)/ Felipe VI encouraged those attendees in the Forum of Davos to invest in a competitive Spain, which complies with the law and where the Constitution is not “a mere decorative object” but “a key pillar of democratic coexistence”.

The crisis in Catalonia offers as a lesson the need to preserve the rule of law as the cornerstone of democracy itself, said the Spanish king.

In his speech before the plenary session in the Forum of Davos, which brings together some 3,000 participants, including 70 heads of state and government, in its 48th edition, Felipe VI referred to the “attempt to undermine the basic rules of the democratic system in Catalonia”.

The King explained national sovereignty belongs “to all citizens” and that welfare and progress will not be achieved with “isolation or division”.

In his speech, he recalled Global Peace Index places Spain among the 19 “complete democracies” in the world, behind the British monarchy.

He also said that the Autonomous Communities enjoy broad self-government “difficult to find in other countries”, inside and outside Europe.

Felipe VI devoted much of his intervention in Davos to clear doubts about the future of Spain, “a great country” that “contributes positively to the strengthening of the European Union, after growing steadily for three years, creating more than two million jobs and reduce the public deficit more than 70,000 million euros.

The monarch invited attendees to invest in the “success story” of Spain, “one of the safest countries in the world” underlining the “excellence” of its tourism industry and the importance of its health system, “appreciated by tourists , migrants and foreign residents “.

Before heading to the plenary, Felipe VI met with Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma, founder and owner of the e-commerce giant Alibaba, and listened to the speech delivered at the Forum by the president of Brazil, Michel Temer. (January 24, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
