Madrid / Half a million copies sold, 22 editions and its translation from next year to 12 languages endorse “the phenomenon” of “Patria”, the novel with which Fernando Aramburu from San Sebastián (San Sebastián, 1959) has obtained the Prize National Narrative today.

Fernando Aramburu never thought, and still “without understanding”, that ‘Patria’ would have “so much impact, so many good reviews and such a good sale” but his only desire is to continue writing every day and do it in the vital environment that it has been created.

“It was a surprise because I did not expect this. I am not a person who expects prizes”, the author, graduate in Spanish Philology and professor of Spanish in Germany since 1985, told EFE.

The jury has understood that he deserves the prize, which is called by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and is endowed with 20,000 Euros, for the psychological depth of his characters, his narrative tension and the integration of views, “as well as for the will to write a global novel about a few years convulsed in the Basque Country”.

Aramburu took three years to write “Patria” and in it portrays the human complexity of nine characters within the bloody history of the last 30 years of the Basque Country through two friends, Miren and Bittori, and their families, separated by the murder of the husband of one of them at the hands of ETA.

“Homeland”, which marks the beginning of the day when ETA announces the abandonment of arms, speaks of the impossibility of forgetting and the need for forgiveness through the coexistence of its protagonists.

His book, Aramburu anticipates, will be released on January 12 next year in Germany, respecting the title in Spanish – “‘patria’ is a very recognizable word” – and throughout the year in 11 other countries. (October 17, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
