The journalist Fernando Garea is already president of the Agencia EFE, after the Board of Directors of the public news company today unanimously approved his appointment.
Garea (Madrid, 1962), thirteenth president of Efe, will replace José Antonio Vera, who has been in charge since 2012.
The new president, who was proposed by the government and received last Wednesday the approval of the Congress with the support of all parliamentary groups, today begins to exercise its functions after the appointment of the Board of Directors.
Until his appointment, Garea served as deputy to the management of El Confidencial, participated in the founding of newspapers El Mundo and Público and was responsible for the parliamentary information of El País between 2008 and 2017.
He has also worked as a talk show guest on radio and TV programs such as “A Vivir que son Dos Días” by Cadena Ser or in “24 Horas” by Radio Nacional, as well as in political debates on the television channels Antena 3, Telecinco, Cuatro or CNN +.
In his appearance before the Nominating Committee of the Congress, Garea defended a critical journalism with power, made an allegation for the dignity of the profession and showed his intention to rejuvenate the staff of Agencia EFE.

“I have opinions which I obviously maintain, some opinions don’t coincide with those of some of your lordships and ladyship. Now, I am aware that I am going to preside over a public agency that must tend towards neutrality and plurality but I believe in critical journalism and that is what I have always tried to do. And if at the end of my term someone feels annoyed, I would like it to bethe power who is annoyed with my management before than the opposition. I think this is the essence of a public communication medium.”
