Rome / The 74th edition of the Venice Film Festival opening today will speak Spanish thanks to filmmakers such as the Mexican Guillermo del Toro or Fernando León de Aranoa from Madrid, along with his actors Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
The film competition, from today until September 9, reaches its 74th edition and does so with a meager presence of Hispanic-American cinema in its main section, but not in other sections of the festival.
On this occasion, of the 21 films that will compete for the highest award, the “Golden Lion”, only one signed by a Latin American filmmaker: “The shape of water” by Del Toro.
The director of “The Labyrinth of the Faun” (2006) competes for the first time in Venice with a U.S. science fiction production set in the Cold War and starring Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon.
On his way to maximum recognition of the “Mostra”, he will encounter other great figures such as George Cloooney, Alexander Payne or Darren Aronofsky.
The latter, “Golden Lion” in 2008 for “The Wrestler”, will present in Venice its latest footage, “Mother!”, a story of psychological terror that will bring together on the big screen Spanish Javier Bardem and American Jennifer Lawrence.
The Spanish language will be felt in other and multiple sections of the oldest festival.
In the section “Horizons”, dedicated to new aesthetic trends, Argentine director Pablo Giorgelli (Las Acacias, 2011) will compete with his feature film “Invisible”, which is about the anxieties and fears of a young woman facing her unexpected pregnancy.
Besides, Iranian Alireza Khatami with “Los versos del olvido”, co-produced between Germany, Chile, France and Holland and performed by actors such as Spanish Juan Margallo, Tomás del Estal, Manuel Morón or Itziar Aizpuru.
Colombian Juan Sebastián Mesa, who last year won the Critics’ Week prize for “Los Noyes”, will compete in “Horizons” with his short film “Tierra Mojada”, about the consequences of progress at all costs.
Hispanic cinema will also be representing out of Competition with the last work by Fernando León de Aranoa, “Loving Pablo”, in which his compatriots Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz will give life to Colombian criminal Pablo Escobar and journalist Virginia Vallejo.
In this section out of competition the Argentine Lucrecia Martel will premiere “Zama”, which counts among its cast with actors such as Spanish Daniel Giménez Cacho and Lola Dueñas, also Argentine Juan Minujín or Brazilian Matheus Nachtergaele.
This year, for the first time in its long history, the Venice Film Festival will include in a special section a contest for a technique that I have already paid special attention to in the last edition: virtual reality.
Among the twenty projects selected for competition are three directed by Spaniards: it is “Melita”, American production signed by Nicolás Alcalá, who also participates with Rafael Pavón in “Snatch VR Heist Experience”.
On the other hand Jose Roig will compete with “The Argos File”, produced by the United States.
In the 32nd International Critics’ Week in Venice, in parallel to the Festival, Argentina’s Natalia Garagiola competes with her “Temporada de caza” and in the “Jornadas de los Autores” of independent film, the Colombian Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza shows “Candelaria”.
