FINE OF 110 MILLION EUROS ON FACEBOOK FOR INCORRECT OR MISLEADING INFORMATION

The European Commission (EC) on Thursday has imposed a fine of 110 million euros ($122.4m) on Facebook for providing incorrect or misleading information in connection with the 2014 purchase of mobile messaging service WhatsApp.

The decision, which does not affect the authorization of the acquisition operation, refers to the fact that Facebook ensured at that time that the Whatsapp profiles could not be linked with those of its users, a possibility that included when changing its policy of Privacy two years later, in August 2016.

The Community executive contends that Facebook has committed two different infringements by providing inaccurate and misleading information on the one hand with the notification of the merger and on the other with the response to a request for information from the Community executive.

The Commission considers that these infringements are serious because they have prevented it from having all the necessary information to carry out its task linked to the assessment of the operation, Brussels has expounded in a statement.

Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager has said that Facebook cooperated in the investigation and it admitted that it had violated the rules.

“Thanks to this cooperation, the fine is lower than it could have been,” the commissioner added.

The company, which does not intend to appeal the decision, has stated in a statement that “today’s announcement ends this matter.”

A spokesman for the social network has said that the company acted “in good faith” and that its “mistakes” were not “intentional”.
