Firefighters announce the total extinction of fire at Notre-Dame cathedral

Paris / The fire that has devastated Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris since Monday has been completely extinguished, although there may be residual seats which must be monitored, the spokesman of the firefighters, Gabriel Plus, said on Tuesday.

“The fire has been extinguished in its entirety,” Plus said in statements to the press, before stating that “there may be residual seats” and that a hundred firefighters will continue working all day.

Their mission will also be to extract, with the help of experts, some works of art which couldn’t be removed, he added.

The fire-fighting services estimate the fire spread through a thousand square meters of the roof, although the objective that was set, which was to preserve the North and South towers, was reached.

The Minister of Culture, Franck Riester, stated fire destroyed two thirds of the roof of the cathedral, and in particular the needle in whose reconstruction was being worked on and which appears as the place where the fire probably started.

The French State, as the owner of the building, has committed to be involved in the reconstruction and at the same time has launched a subscription so that they can make contributions from private donors.

The Paris Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation last night for involuntary destruction by fire. The authorities privilege the accidental track. (April 16, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
