FIVE SPANIARDS ARE SAFE AFTER TOTAL EVACUATION FROM A VOLCANO IN INDONESIA

Djakarta / Today, the Indonesian authorities confirmed the evacuation of 543 mountaineers, including five Spaniards, who were trapped in the Rianjani volcano, on the island of Lombok, after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake registered on Sunday.

The rescued received medical care on the eve and are out of danger, confirmed Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in social networks, pending the rescue of at least 10 climbers.

It’s unknown for the moment if the evacuated Spaniards continue on the island of Lombok.

Among the people, who were trapped, there were 189 foreigners, 173 national visitors, 31 guides and 150 carriers, the spokesperson for the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugrohooy, said in a statement.

There are still to be evacuated at least 10 mountaineers of Indonesian nationality, according to the BNPB.

The last to leave the volcano today were 6 climbers who were waiting for the collection of the body of an Indonesian who died due to a landslide during the earthquake.

Last night the thickness reached the foot of the Rinjani, while today a helicopter and at least 20 people participated in the operation to transport the body of the deceased.

The BNPB previously estimated 689 the number of isolated mountaineers, according to the entry record to the volcano’s national park.

On Sunday, the 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Lombok, killing 16 people (one Malaysian woman and fifteen Indonesians), causing panic and causing avalanches and landslides in the volcano that blocked the access roads.

In addition, more than one thousand buildings were damaged and about 5,000 people were evacuated and housed in shelters, although the infrastructure of the island remain operational.

Rinjani is an active volcano, the second highest in Indonesia, rising 3,726 meters above sea level.

On Monday, the Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, visited the evacuees due to the earthquake and issued a directive to assist the affected areas with human and economic resources.

In 2004, an earthquake near the north-western coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra caused a tsunami that killed at least 280,000 people in a dozen countries bathed by the Indian Ocean, mostly in Indonesia.

This country is based on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire“, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity shaken by some 7,000 tremors a year, most of them moderate. (July 31, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
