FOREIGN JIHADISTS LOYAL TO ISIS EXACERBATES CRISIS IN THE SOUTH OF THE PHILIPPINES

The crisis in the Philippine city of Marawi, where fighting between soldiers and rebels totaled more than 40 dead in four days, has reached a new dimension as the participation of foreign jihadists indoctrinated by the Islamic State (EI) is revealed.

Of the 31 rebels killed by soldiers since Tuesday in this city on the island of Mindanao has been identified to 12, and of which half were citizens from Indonesia and Malaysia, according to a press conference of the Philippine Attorney General , Jose Calida.

This becomes the greatest insurrection of the last years in the country – considered so far a local episode – into “an invasion of foreign terrorists who have heard the call of the EI”, according to Calida.

Although the army refuses to confirm the presence of the EI in the Philippines, the fact is that this group has already expressed on several occasions its intention to proclaim a caliphate in the south of the country, where there are areas of Muslim majority, especially in the west of Mindanao.

All island of Mindanao, home to 22 million people and Muslims a minority, has remained under martial law since President Rodrigo Duterte issued the order Tuesday after the terror broke out in Marawi.

In this town of only 200,000 inhabitants, fighting between soldiers and the last dozen jihadists continued today, after three days in which two policemen and 11 soldiers have died.

“We continue to try to clear the city as soon as possible,” Armed Forces spokesman Restituto Padilla told Efe while Defense Minister Delfín Lorenzana predicted it could take up to a week to reach that goal.

Atahualpa Amerise from EFE Agency reported them from Manila.
