FROM “DOWNTON ABBEY” TO “BELGRAVIA”

As in Downton Abbey, Julian Felowes resorts to romance in “Belgravia”, family intrigue and tensions between two families distanced by the social differences in Victorian England, his favourite topic, and still today “determining”, according to he says.

Belgravia “is a novel about hope, optimistic, like most of my work although I am, in my personal life, quite pessimistic,” he told EFE, about the publication of his novel in Spanish.

The creator of Downton Abbey settles his new story in the nineteenth century in Belgravia, one of the most luxurious neighborhoods in the world, in the centre of London, and as in the hit television series he resorts to romance, family intrigue and tensions of two families distanced by the social differences of Victorian England.

The story begins after the Battle of Waterloo, 1815, in a pompous and elitist feast of the high British society that becomes a tragedy.

And although the notion of social class is determinant, “Belgravia” also encloses in its pages the philosophy of the author: to be in the life what you want to be.

The novel, which can become a miniseries, is already one of the best-selling books in the United Kingdom, United States, France and Italy.

Felowes thinks it is “a book to buy and read on the beach, lying on a towel”.

Scriptwriter, novelist and filmmaker, Felowes, 67, is the author of “Esnobs” (2004) and “Past Imperfect” (2008), has three Emmys as creator, screenwriter and producer by “Downton Abbey” and an Oscar for Best Screenplay by the movie “Gosford Park”.
