Gabon’s thwarted coup leader arrested, 2 other soldiers shot dead

Libreville / The alleged leader of a thwarted coup in Gabon was arrested on Monday and two other soldiers have been shot dead by government security forces, official sources have said.

Earlier in the day, a group of soldiers announced they had taken control of the state radio station and seized power from the country’s long-ruling president.

“Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang has been arrested in a neighborhood near the radio station while trying to flee,” military sources close to the presidency of the African country told EFE.

The same sources said government forces launched an operation to evict the rebels from the state radio station earlier.

The Gabonese Ministry of Information told the media that two rebel soldiers were killed by security forces and another three, including Obiang, were detained and placed at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The failed coup attempt came a week after President Ali Bongo delivered a New Year’s speech to the nation from Morocco, where he has been receiving medical treatment since the end of November.

Obiang added Bongo’s speech had “reinforced doubts about the president’s capability to continue in office.”

According to local media outlets, gunshots were heard in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, as Obiang was reading the statement.

In 2016, Bongo was re-elected in a tight race, sparking protests that left several people dead and led to the arrests of thousands more.

The Bongo family has ruled the oil-rich central African nation for 50 years, with the current president taking power from his father in 2009. (January 7, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
