Gantz wins Israeli elections by narrow margins with 90% of the votes counted

Jerusalem / The Blue and White center coalition of Beni Gantz outperforms the right-wing Likud party of Benjamin Netanyahu by narrow margins with about 90% of the votes counted, so, waiting for the final results, the strength of the outgoing prime minister handicapped party to form government in Israel.

According to data from the Central Election Committee, Blue and White has obtained 25.66% of the votes, which would correspond to 32 seats, one more than Likud, which with 25.03% of the votes would remain at 31 seats.

Waiting for possible changes in the scrutiny of the remaining 10% of votes, neither of the two formations has enough seats to have a majority alone.

In total, 4.4 million people went to the polls yesterday and so far there are more than 4 million votes counted.

The United Arab List, which represents the Arab-Israeli minority, is emerging as the third most voted force with 10.71% of the support, which would result in 13 seats.

Behind are the ultra-Orthodox party Sephardic Shas, with 7.56% of the vote (9 seats), the far-right Israel Our Home with 7.11% (9 seats) and the ultra-religious Ashkenazi United Judaism of the Torah with the 6.25% (8 seats).

In the last places are the right-wing and religious coalition Yamina with 5.73% (7 seats), the Labor-Guesher coalition with 4.81% (6 seats) and the left-wing Democratic Union with 4.30% ( 5 legislators).

The Jewish Power Party, considered racist, would not exceed the 3.25% threshold required to enter the Knesset (Parliament).

Gantz expects a “good unity government”

Faced with this scenario, a complex process of negotiations opens in which the Likud and Blue and White must seek pacts if they want to form a government, for which they need at least 61 seats in a Parliament composed of 120 seats.

Gantz said this morning that he hopes for “Israel a convenient and good unity government” and reiterated his willingness to agree with other forces, among which could be Likud and the ultra-right-wing party Israel Our Home of Avigdor Lieberman.

According to current estimates, neither the block of right-wing, extreme-right and religious parties nor that of center and left-wing parties with the Arabs could form a coalition executive.

The ability to decant the balance will be Lieberman, who has emerged as a champion of secularism and refuses to agree with the ultra-Orthodox.

The former Minister of Defense and former ally of Netanyahu has urged to create a cabinet with the Likud and Blue and White.

This is a perspective that those of Gantz do not look unkindly, but they want out Netanyahu and refuse to govern with him for the cases of corruption that persecute him, so that negotiations on this line are complicated from the beginning. (September 18, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
