Valparaíso (Chile) / More than 25,000 people visited the exhibition of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí in an innovative exhibition that combines the classic models with virtual reality glasses in Valparaíso, the most bohemian city of Chile, which is located on the coast, 110 kilometers from Santiago.
This exhibition, which can be visited until May 10 in Valparaíso, turned into a cultural center, exceeded in less than two months any expectations of the organization, which sees how from Tuesday to Sunday many curious people come to see the work of the architect of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
This free exhibition, promoted by the College of Architects of Chile, wants to “democratize access to culture” and, therefore, they deployed in an itinerant way throughout the Valparaiso region its 152 original pieces.
In addition to the models that recreate the most famous works of the Catalan architect such as La Pedrera, Park Güell and Casa Batlló, the exhibition has a room for virtual reality in which visitors can observe in 3D with a special kind of glasses, the inside and outside of these three spaces.
“I do not know if we have given the title to a madman or a genius,” said the director of the architecture degree when Gaudí finished his studies, as it can be read in the entry of the exhibition.
The greatest exponent of Modernism
The greatest exponent of architectural modernism still arises interest to more than 11,500 kilometers from his homeland, with its fantastic constructions, inspired by the forms of nature, and full of religious symbolism.
This exhibition also has original photographs and sculptures designed and made by Gaudí himself, who was involved in all the details of his buildings, beyond the façade.
During these two months, seminars and workshops in which “trencadís” was taught were also held. “Trencadís” is a technique that the Catalan architect invented and used in most of his works. It consists in gluing small pieces of broken pottery in order to create a mosaic of colors.
Given this great success, the Catalan Tourism Agency held an event in the cultural center that hosts this exhibition to publicize other tourist attractions in the region.
“We want to show that if someone visits Catalonia, they will find this and much more,” Patrick Torrent, the agency’s executive director, told Efe.
2019 is the “cultural” year in this organism of the Generalitat and that is why the focus is being placed on events like this Gaudí exhibition in Chile.
“We do not promote cultural actions, we take advantage of them to share that this is just a part of the experience in Catalonia, of the cultural dynamism that already exists there,” Torrent added.
“The year 2017 was historic as the region had 19.1 million foreign visitors. In 2018, we kept the figures and the expense of tourists was even increased by 7.2%”, concluded the executive director, who denied a possible drop in the number of foreign visitors due to the political situation.
