Berlin / Germany had some 1.6 million registered asylum seekers at the end of 2016, constituting 16 percent of the country’s foreign population, the country’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) said in a statement Thursday.
The number of people seeking legal protection _ political asylum or any type of subsidiary protection _ in the European nation at the end of 2016 had increased by 851,000 since the end of 2014, which meant an increase of 113 percent.
Of these 1.6 million people, 573,000 were waiting for an administrative decision about their status, while 872,000 had received a residence permit on humanitarian grounds, although the majority of them were temporary.
The country which had the highest number of asylum seekers in Germany was Syria with 455,000 people, followed by Afghanistan with 191,000 and Iraq with 156,000.
The number of males among those seeking protection was 64 percent, while the average age was 29.4 years old.
The number of asylum seekers increased especially in the east, which saw a 153 increase in comparison with 2014, while the west saw an increase of 107 percent.
However, 85 percent of the total number of asylum seekers were living in the west at the end of 2016, with the highest number in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The report said that apart from these 1.6 million people, on Dec. 31, 2016 about 392,000 other foreigners were present in the country, but they had not informed the administration if they wanted to seek asylum. (November 2, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
