GERMANY PUTS AN END TO UNCERTAINTY WITH MERKEL’S FOURTH INVESTITURE

Berlin / On Wednesday, Angela Merkel has been elected German Chancellor for a fourth term, an absolute majority in the Bundestag has supported her after the grand coalition agreement reached between conservatives and social democrats.

Merkel got 364 votes in favour when she needed a minimum of 355, while 315 deputies voted against, nine abstained and four invalid votes were registered.

The sum of conservatives and social democrats is 399 seats, so 35 of these deputies have not supported the chancellor.

“I accept the vote”, Merkel said after the voting.

The president of the chamber, Wolfgang Schäuble, has wished him “strength and success” to face the great tasks of the legislature.

Merkel was then formally appointed chancellor by the country’s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and then returned to Parliament to swear his oath.

The chancellor has thus put an end to the almost six months of political blockade that followed the elections last September.

The elections left a fragmented parliament and few options to form a stable government by the fall of the great parties and the rise of the extreme right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD).

In the new Executive, the conservatives will have nine post of Ministers and Social Democrats will have six. (March 15, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
