Gloria leaves four dead in Spain and damages in the Peninsula and Balearic Islands

Madrid / The storm Gloria which is affecting Spain since the weekend with strong wind, rains and snowfall has left four dead, several injured, river overflows, destruction on the promenades, cuts of electricity and transport services and large losses in citrus crops in the Valencian Community. The last victim, a 71-year-old man died of hypothermia in the Valencian town of Moixent, where he was found in an area of difficult access and, although he was transferred to the population’s Health Center, the assistance couldn’t save his life.

In Ávila, a 63-year-old man lost his life in the town of Pedro Bernardo after a tile fell from the strong wind; before, in Gandía (Valencian Community), a 54-year-old woman was found dead, supposedly due to hypothermia, in a park in the town where she lived.

Also, in Valencia, a 6-year-old girl, and in the Valencian town of Lliria, a 37-year-old man was injured when a piece of cornice fell as a result of the wind.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects the strong wind, rains, snow and swell of the storm Gloria will last until Thursday in several provinces, especially in the east, southeast and northwest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

The storm Gloria is affecting especially the east and southeast of the Peninsula, where the strong wind has knocked down trees and walls and the waves on the coast have left the beaches without sand and the promenades are very affected.

Closure of schools in the Valencian Community, Castilla y León and Catalonia

The closure of schools or the suspension of bus routes due to snow have affected almost 192,000 students in the Valencian Community, another 21,400 in Castilla-La Mancha; 492 in Castilla y León and 60,000 in Catalonia.

Likewise, the fall of two towers has left more than 10,000 people without power supply in Orihuela (Alicante), while another 20,000 were affected without supply in the Valencian Community in the early hours.

In Catalonia, emergency services, doctors and firefighters have received more than 2,400 calls for the storm, which has left historical records for waves, with waves of more than 12 meters in Girona, wind gusts of more than 122 kilometers per hour and high levels of snow in some areas.

According to the Medical Emergency System (SEM), at least 21 people have been treated in medical centers for bruises or falls due to wind, one of them is in serious condition due to a bruise.

Aemet keeps a red alert for snow today in Castellón and Teruel; Orange in Cuenca and Guadalajara (Castilla-La Mancha), Zaragoza (Aragon) and Girona (Catalonia); and yellow in Almería, Jaén and Granada (Andalucía), Albacete (Castilla-La Mancha), Ávila, Burgos, Segovia and Soria (Castilla y León), Barcelona, ​​La Rioja and Murcia.
