GORILLA ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH US USING SIGN LANGUAGE REST IN PEACE NOW

Los Angeles / Koko was the only gorilla able to communicate through sign language and has died at age 46 in a sheltered shelter in the mountains of Santa Cruz, California, United States.

The gorilla informed the visitors of the zoo they did not give her food, she had been on the cover of “National Geographic” because of a photo she took herself in front of a mirror in 1978 and ten years later with a cat chosen as a birthday present.

“Koko reached millions of people as an ambassador for all the gorillas and an icon of communication and empathy between species. She was loved and will be deeply missed” told The Gorilla Foundation, dedicated to the protection of this species and responsible for the safety of the animal.

She had an “extraordinary command of sign language and was the main ambassador of her species, in danger of extinction.”

“Her impact has been profound and what she has taught us about the emotional capacity of the gorillas and their cognitive abilities will continue to change the world,” says the Foundation.

Koko was born at the San Francisco Zoo on July 4, 1971. She had a great ability to learn sign language and communicate with humans through this, according to the two researchers of a scientific project at Stanford University, Francine “Penny” Patterson and June Monroe.

In the media, she was widely reviewed also the sadness that showed Koko by the death of All Ball and in a conversation with Patterson the gorilla expressed his sadness and communicated the words “cat”, “crying” and “I have regret”.

When the news of Koko’s death, which occurred “while he slept Tuesday”, was known, the foundation’s website suffered technical problems due to the large influx of visitors seeking more information.

The Gorilla Foundation announced it will honor the memory and “legacy” of the primate with ongoing projects that include a sanctuary for gorillas in Maui, Hawaii, the conservation of wildlife in Africa or the development of a phone application on the language of address.

Research on the DNA of gorillas have established that their genetic code is 95-98% equal to that of humans, being the third closest to humans after two species of chimpanzees. (June 22, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
