Green Book, Roma win big at Oscars 2019

Antonio Martin Guirado / Los Angeles (United States) Green Book,” Peter Farrelly’s first foray into the genre of drama won big at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday with three awards, including the coveted Best Picture.

Green Book, also won Mahershala Ali the Best Supporting Actor award, and also grabbed the award for Best Original Screenplay.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” grabbed him his career’s fourth statuette, along with the awards for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Film, making it the first win for Mexico in the foreign film category.

The award for the Best Foreign film was presented by Spanish actor Javier Bardem and Angela Bassett.

“There are no borders or walls that can restrain ingenuity and talent,” the Oscar-winning actor said in Spanish.

Other notable Mexican winners in the past have been Cuaron in 2014 for “Gravity”; Alexandro Gonzalez Iñárritu in 2015 and 2016 for “Birdman” and “The Revenant” respectively, and Guillermo del Toro in 2018 with “The Shape of Water.”

The biggest win of the night, however, was “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which won the Best Actor for Rami Malek for his portrayal of British rock band Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury.

“Thank you Queen (…) for allowing me to the tiniest part of your phenomenal and extraordinary legacy. I am forever in your debt,” said Malek in his acceptance speech.

Malek, an American citizen, born to Egyptian immigrants, said that the fact that he won on a night that was dedicated to celebrate diverse stories and people with identity struggles, was “proof that we’re longing for stories like this”.

The film also won the awards for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Editing.

“Black Panther” too grabbed the awards for Best Original Soundtrack, Best Costumes and Best Production design at the award ceremony on Sunday.

In a major upset, English actor Olivia Colman won the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Queen Anne in “The Favourite”, over Glenn Close, a favorite to win the award for her work in “The Wife “.

Regina King won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “If Beale Street Could Talk”, while Ali won his second Oscar for Best Supporting Actor after his first win for “Moonlight” in 2016.

Another highlight of the night was Spike Lee, who won his first ever Oscar in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for “BlacKkKlansman.”

He collected the award from Samuel L. Jackson, after giving him a warm embrace on stage.

“The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilize. Let’s all be on the right side of history. Make the moral choice between love versus hate,” said a visibly excited Lee.

“Let’s do the right thing!” concluded the filmmaker in a nod to his 1989 film “Do the Right Thing.”

Pop star Lady Gaga, who was nominated for Best Actress for “A Star is Born” performed the song “Shallow”, which won for being the Best Original Song, with co-star Bradley Cooper.

“There’s not a single person on the planet that could have sung this song with me but you. Thank you for believing in us,” said Gaga addressing Cooper, who also directed the movie.

The Oscar for Best Animated Feature went to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” one of the surprises of the season for its good performance both at the box office and the award circuit, as well as critical acclaim.

The Best Documentary Feature went to “Free Solo”, which tells the story of professional rock climber Alex Honnold, who free-climbed the 914-metre (2,999 feet) of the vertical rock face at Yosemite National Park. (February 25, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
