Madrid / The 56.3 percent of people aged 18 to 64 in Spain know a different language than their mother tongue, according to an official survey released by the National Institute of Statistics.
According to this institute, 40, 3 percent of Spaniards speak English.
English is followed by French (14.0%), German (2.8%), Italian (2.6%) and Portuguese (1.7%),
As a native or non-native language, in Spain, 98.9 percent of the population speaks Spanish.
Also as mother tongue or non-mother tongue, Spanish is followed by Catalan (17.5 percent), Galician (6.2%), Valencian (5.8%) and Basque (3.0%).
As a mother tongue, 82.8% of Galicians speak Galician, Catalan 55.5% and 42.9% of residents in the Balearic Islands speak Catalan, 35.2%Valencians speak Valencian and 33,7% of the Basques and 14.6% of the Navarrese speak Basque. (November 30, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
