HEZBOLLAH IS REINFORCED IN THE LEBANESE ELECTIONS

The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and its allies have emerged reinforced from the parliamentary elections held on Sunday, while the party “Tayar al Mustakbal” (Current of the Future) of the head of the Government, the Sunni Saad Hariri, has recognized the loss of support.

According to the data known so far, in the absence of the official announcement, Hezbollah has achieved 13 seats out of the 128 that Parliament has, 64 of which correspond to the Christian community and 64 to the Muslim community.

The seats of the Shiite movement, added to the 16 of the Shia also Amal and the rest of parties and lists related to this movement, could put Hezbollah at the head of the largest political force in the Legislative Assembly with 67 deputies – the majority in parliament It is 65-.

However, the analyst and university professor, Hyam Mallat, stressed to EFE that “all the parliamentary groups will be obliged to talk to each other and nobody will be able to take unilateral decisions”.

On Sunday, some 3.5 million voters were called to elect the 128 deputies, among 77 closed lists.

Opposite the Hezbollah-led bloc, Prime Minister Hariri’s party has suffered a serious setback and will be left with 19 deputies, compared to the 32 that it had in the previous Parliament.

Hariri himself, who yesterday announced that his party won 21 seats, admitted that he expected better results to form a larger coalition that would include Christians and Shiite Muslims, within its Sunni-dominated current.

“This is not the end of the world,” said the President of the Government, who considered that since his party “they should have done more” to obtain better results.

According to the data known so far, the coalition of parties led by Corriente del Futuro could keep only 26 seats.

However, for the analyst Michel Naufal, given “the structure of the inter-community or confessional system” that determines the parliamentary division by creeds, as well as that the prime minister is Sunni Muslim, the president of the Shiite Muslim Parliament, and the president of the Christian country Maronite, the composition of the new parliament “will not cause many changes”.
