HISPANIST HUGH THOMAS DIES IN LONDON

British historian and hispanist Hugh Thomas died at his home in London at the age of 85, according to the Spanish newspaper ABC, in which he collaborated.

Thomas was the author of the book “The Spanish Civil War”, published by Ruedo Ibérico in Paris in 1961, a clandestine title in the Franco regime and among his works are highlighting: “The formation of Hernán Cortés”, “I, Moctezuma, emperor of The Aztecs “,” The slave trade “,” The Cuban revolution “,” The Spanish Empire of Columbus to Magellan “or” Barreiros, the motor of Spain “or “The conquest of Mexico”.

This hispanist was already arguing in 1990 that many British Conservatives and Labour politicians were suspicious of the European Community and believed that the Unity of Europe meant losing the identity and sovereignty of our country, according to he told EFE.

About Hernán Cortés, he wrote that “he never used violence gratuitously, he was never cruel because of sadism and when he used armed terror he did it in order to win the war”, emphasized the British historian Hugh Thomas, whose work “The conquest of Mexico” has just been translated into Spanish.

And on Jovellanos, he said that he was “a frustrated art critic” who, however, left for Spain’s history “his legend of unshakable honesty, patriotism and courage” along with his “fascination with new ideas.”

The historian also maintained that after Christopher Columbus, Spain and America were twin souls in their development and ways of life.
