Hong Kong leader formally withdraws extradition bill

Hong Kong / Hong Kong’s leader on Wednesday formally withdrew a contentious extradition bill that sparked months of protests across the special administrative region.

“The government will formally withdraw the bill in order to fully allay public concerns,” Chief Executive Carrie Lam said in a televised address.

“The secretary for security will move a motion according to the rules of procedure when the Legislative Council resumes,” she added.

It was one of the five demands of the protesters, who also want an independent inquiry set up to investigate abuse of police power.

“On setting up a Commission of Inquiry. The government believes that matters relating to police enforcement actions are best handled by the existing and well-established Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC),” Lam said.

The demonstrations began in March in opposition to the contentious extradition bill, which according to lawyers and activists, could have enabled suspects to be extradited from Hong Kong to mainland China to face trial under Beijing’s judicial system.

The demonstrations have resulted in the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of people since June, and have been accompanied by police repression in order to thwart attempts to disrupt the normal course of the city with strikes and occupation of its public spaces.

Though the proposed law was declared “dead” by Lam in early July, the anti-extradition bill campaign has morphed into a broader movement seeking to reverse a general decline in freedoms and investigate alleged police brutality, violations of law and oppose Chinese authoritarianism.  (September 4, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
