IDENTIFY 40 NEW GENES RELATED TO INTELLIGENCE

A scientists team has identified 40 new genes related to intelligence and the brain areas in which these act, according to a study published in the journal Nature Genetics.

The research, led by experts at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Holland, could bring new biological knowledge about brain function and cognitive processes as well as the genetic component of human intelligence.

For this study, the scientists carried out an analysis of the complete of genome-wide association (GWAS) of 78,308 individuals of European descent, including cohorts of children and adults.

The large sample size gave the lead researcher, Danielle Posthuma, and her colleagues, the analytical ability to identify a significant number of new genes.

The authors of the study also provided new insights into specific areas of the genome that contribute to the development of human intelligence.

In this sense, they identified 22 genes, 11 of which were unknown until now, that are associated with intelligence thanks to the meta-analysis “GWAS”.

They also discovered twenty-nine additional new genes through another type of tool called the complete genome-wide gene association (GWGAS).

These genes, experts say, are expressed primarily in the brain and are involved in processes of cellular development.

This new information, they emphasize, can help researchers focus their studies on specific genes to advance the knowledge of intelligence and brain development.
