Beijing / Large international companies such as Ikea, Uniqlo, Starbucks or Apple are slowly reopening their stores in China to the apparent decline in the new contagions of COVID-19 in the country.
As reported by the official Global Times newspaper today, only 20% of the stores in China of the Japanese clothing chain Uniqlo remained closed since last 26, while that figure rose on February 7 to almost half of its near 750 establishments in China. That medium also indicates that the French department stores Galeries Lafayette also restarted yesterday their two locations in China, in Beijing and Shanghai.
The Swedish furniture and household chain Ikea announced on January 30 that it would close its 33 stores in China until further notice for the outbreak of the coronavirus.
However, in a statement published yesterday in its official Weibo account -the Chinese Twitter-, it indicated that because “the epidemic has been controlled gradually and effectively in many parts of the country,” it will open four of its stores from from March 1 and another on March 2.
Also, this week the CEO of the US coffee chain Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, announced that 85% of its stores in China were already operational.
According to Shanghai Shine newspaper, 31 of the 42 stores in the Asian country of the American technology company Apple had already reopened their doors this week after they were closed all earlier this month for fear of the disease.
The latest official balance sheet offered by the Chinese authorities indicates that 327 new cases and 44 deaths were recorded in China last year by COVID-19, although, if data from Hubei province, the focus of the epidemic, are excluded, the figure is 9 new infections and 3 deaths.
The cumulative number of deaths so far in China stands at 2,788 and confirmed cases, at 78,824, the National Health Commission reported today. (February 28, 2020, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
