India counts the votes after a general election of six weeks

New Delhi / After more than a month of voting, India began today the count of the general elections called for the 900 million voters of the country and the first data give to the governing party Bharatiya Janata (BJP), of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a comfortable victory.

The Electoral Commission of India (EC) began the poll at 08:00 local time (2.30 GMT) and it is expected that the first clear results will begin to be announced during the first hours of the afternoon.

According to the first official data, after two hours of beginning the recount, the BJP leader led in 294 seats, without having been attributed the final victory over any of these.

Several polls published this Sunday already gave the Hindu nationalist BJP and its allies more than 280 seats, most of the 542 seats of the Lok Sabha, the Lower House, and enough to form a majority government.

They also predicted between 80 and 160 seats for the opposition Congress Party of the Nerhu-Ghandi dynasty, which would represent, despite the defeat, a recovery of the historic formation led by Rahul Ghandi that in the last race, in 2014, got its worst electoral setback with only 44 seats.

In the last hours the concerns of the Congress Party, which for the moment is leading the recount in only 50 seats, and its supporters have been increasing along with fears of fraud in some areas of the country.

“The next 24 hours are important. We must be alert. Do not feel afraid, our struggle is the truth. Do not be disappointed with the false surveys, “Gandhi posted on Twitter yesterday as dozens of supporters in different parts of the country camped on the outskirts of the centers of the EC to monitor the voting machines before the count.

The general elections that took place over the course of six weeks, in seven staggered phases, will define who will hold the reins of the country for the next five years.

With a participation that exceeded 60% on average, it is estimated that around 600 million Indians cast their vote at the polls to elect the 542 parliamentary legislators. (May 23, 2019. EFE/Practica Español)
