In Spanish language, the questions can do it in two ways: direct or indirect.

√ The question or direct interrogation is traditional. As its name suggest, it request the information necessary, reproduces textually and appears between two question marks (¿?):

– ¿Qué llevas en esa mochila?

– ¿Cuántos años tienes?

– ¿Qué quieres para comer?

– ¿Quieres venir con nosotros al cine?

√ Indirect questions are embedded in a compound sentence in which the main sentence isn’t interrogative and don’t appear between two question marks (¿?).

– Me gustaría saber qué llevas en esa mochila.

– Te importaría decirme cuántos años tienes.

In some cases, it’s used to repeat a question that other person asked a direct question. In these sentences, the interrogative pronouns (qué, quién, cuándo, cuánto…) also have tilde.

– Me ha pedido mamá que te pregunte que qué quieres para comer.

– Dice que no sabe qué hacer.

In the cases in which we don’t need interrogative pronouns, indirect questions uses the conjunction si.

– Andrés dice que si has comprado la cena.

– Ayer hablé con Jesús y quería saber si quieres venir con nosotros al cine.
