Elon Musk and singer Grimes have recently been the parents of a son named X Æ A-XII. But they are not the only known characters who bet on originality when it comes to registering their children. These are some examples.
When businessman Elon Musk and singer Grimes announced the name of their first child together, X Æ A-12, reactions on social media were swift. Some wondered how it was pronounced and others, even if it was legal. In late May, the couple was forced to slightly modify the baby’s name because California laws do not allow numbers to be included. The solution was to write 12 in Roman numerals, XII.
It is probably one of the most original and strange names that have been seen among actors, singers and well-known people in recent years, but it is far from the only one.
From Apple to Zuma Nesta Rock
It is not new to make headlines by choosing a name. In 2004, the then-couple formed by Coldplay singer Chris Martin and actress Gwyneth Paltrow announced that they would call their daughter Apple, which means apple. According to Paltrow told Oprah Winfrey in 2004, the choice was made by Martin.
“When we were pregnant the first time, her dad said, ‘If it’s a girl, I think her name should be Apple,'” the actress said. “It sounded so sweet and it created such a lovely image for me … Apples are so sweet and healthy and it’s biblical,” she added.
The leader of the British gang is far from the only one in the industry with a fondness for curious names.
Before Martin gave his daughter a fruit name, Frank Zappa, considered by many to be one of the best musicians in history, opted to call his offspring in an unusual way: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Diva Thin Muffin and Ahmet .
Gwen Stefani, singer and member of the defunct band No Doubt, followed suit and also chose peculiar names for her descendants. Stefani had three children during her 13-year marriage to Gavin Rossdale whom she called: Kingston, Zuma Nesta Rock, and Apollo Bowie Flynn.
The first daughter of the couple formed by Jay-Z and Beyoncé was born in 2012. When her famous parents announced her name, more than one was surprised.
The chosen one was Blue Ivy, which in Spanish could be translated as Blue Ivy. For the twins, who were born in 2017, they opted for Sir, who translated into Spanish would be sir, and Rumi.
From Rufus Tiger to Audio Science
The children of singer Alicia Keys and her partner, producer Swizz Beatz, have received the names Egypt Daoud and Genesis Ali from their parents. About the name of her firstborn, Keys said it was related to a trip she made to Egypt alone and that meant a lot to her.
Drummer for British band Queen Roger Taylor named his son Rufus Tiger, with Tiger being the English word for tiger.
Keith Richards, guitarist for The Rolling Stones, and Anita Pallenberg opted to register their girl as Dandelion Angela, Dandelion Anela. Richards, after a few years, chose to trade it for Angela. But her last daughter was named Tara Jo Jo Gunne, who died a few weeks old.
But the extravagant names thing is not just a matter of musicians and their partners. Some actors have also resorted to ingenuity when going to the civil registry to register their children.
In the case of actor Nicolas Cage, nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, and Alice Kim, rather than ingenuity, they turned to comics for the son they have in common. The 14-year-old is called Kal-el, named after Earth-2 Superman.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis named their three daughters Rumer, Scout, who could be translated as an explorer, and Tallulah Belle.
David Duchovny, star of the nineties series “The X-files” and Tea Leoni opted to put her Kyd offspring.
Natalie Portman and her husband, the French choreographer, Benjamin Millepied, looked for inspiration in the Hebrew culture, since Portman is Jewish, the name they adopted for their first-born was Aleph, who is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
For her part, Hawaiian actress and dancer Shannyn Sossamon, known for her roles in “40 days and 40 nights” and “The Holiday,” has two children.
The first of them, which she had with her ex-partner Dallas Clayton and who is already 17 years old, responds to the name of Audio Science or sound science in Spanish. For the second, she resorted to something more traditional: Mortimer.
