ISRAEL CONGRATULATES TRUMP FOR RECOGNIZING JERUSALEM AND PALESTINIANS REJECT IT

Jerusalem / Israel has received with gratitude the recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital by U.S. president, Donald Trump, while the Palestinians have rejected it and warned of serious consequences, although at the moment no measures have been taken.

Trump said he was going to make a decision that had been postponed for a long time and made the United States the first country in the world to recognize the Israeli capital of Jerusalem, the city to which its embassy will move from Tel Aviv.

With his gesture, the president of the United States has committed decades of international consensus that left the future of the city to a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians, although he added that his recognition does not interfere in the final status of the peace negotiations nor determine the borders of Israeli sovereignty in the city.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed a decision they took as “just and courageous” and considered it a way to move towards peace.

The Palestinians, however, terminate the role of the United States as sponsor of the peace process and see in the announcement a violation of international resolutions and agreements.

After Trump’s speech, several hundred Palestinians have taken to the streets of different cities in the West Bank and Gaza and political factions have called for Thursday and Friday the “days of anger” against the change of administration policy of the United States, which has also been rejected by several leaders around the world.
