Israelis head to vote in closely-fought general election

Jerusalem / Polls opened in Israel on Tuesday morning as people queued up outside 10,720 voting stations across the country to caste their ballot in a high stakes election in which the incumbent Prime Minister is seeking a record fifth term in office.

The voting stations were thrown open at 7 am local time (4.00 GMT). Some 200 of them are located in hospitals and over 50 in prisons.

The election to form the country’s 21st Knesset (parliament) and the 35th government is a multi-cornered contest with representatives of some 40 parties in the fray.

However, the battle is widely seen as a race between the main contestants – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who heads the right-wing Likud party, and Benny Gantz of the Kahol Lavan.

Gantz also leads a coalition of centrists, the Blue and White movement, which, according to a recent survey, is tipped to secure the most votes. The former general, whose centrist coalition poses a stiff challenge to Netanyahu, was one of the first ones to vote in the central city of Rosh Haayin.

Netanyahu, who on Saturday said he would extend Israeli sovereignty over parts of the West Bank if re-elected for a fifth term, was expected to vote with his family in Jerusalem around 07.30 GMT.

Israeli authorities have ordered a general closure of the Gaza border crossings and the occupied territory of the West Bank until midnight on the voting day.

The closure of the Judea and Samaria (West Bank) and the crossings into Gaza, which has been under Israeli blockade since 2007, began midnight Monday, according to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan.

The election day is a national holiday, hence the majority of the Israelis will not be working on Tuesday to exercise their right to vote until 10 pm local time.

There are 6.3 million eligible voters out of nearly nine million Israelis. The number of eligible voters has risen by 8.1 percent compared to the previous election.

There are 120 parliamentary seats up for grabs. Some 400 million ballot papers have been printed for which 170 ton of paper has been used.

Israel’s police is believed to have deployed 17,000 agents, border police and volunteers to maintain public order.

Israeli diplomats and embassy employees across Israeli missions were the first ones to vote along with soldiers for whom the voting took place on Sunday. Special polling centers were set up across several military bases of the country. (April 9th, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
