“It was bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!”: The shooting that left ten dead on Monday in a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado (USA)

Washington / A new shooting in the United States left ten dead on Monday in a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. It happened around 14:30 local time (20:30 GMT), when a man armed with an assault rifle opened fire inside a King Soopers chain store. The aggressor was arrested.

Boulder is a city of just over 100,000 people north of Denver and one of the richest in the country.

“He went in and started shooting,” one of the survivors of the attack told The Denver Post.

Another, Ryan Borowski, explained to The Washington Post how he experienced the start of the shooting:

“My first hope was that it was an employee who dropped something. By the third bang, I was running. It was bang, bang, bang, bang, bang! I was thinking around eight (shots).”

Borowski and other King Soopers clients managed to escape the building through the emergency exit or cargo area after hearing the first shots, but nine were not as lucky and were killed.

“Justice will be served”

Images broadcast live on YouTube by a witness a few seconds after the start of the attack show two people killed outside the supermarket and one at the entrance, while several shots are fired from inside the building.

A few minutes later, the first policemen arrive and shots are heard again.

Authorities later confirmed that one of those police officers, who was identified as Eric Talley, 51, was killed in the attack along with the other nine people.

Up to three medical helicopters landed near the King Soopers while the authorities took control, but they couldn’t be used as the victims died at the scene and there were no other injuries.

“I promise the victims that justice will be served,” Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty told a news conference hours later.

No known reason

He also reported the arrest of the alleged attacker, who was injured during the encounter with the police and had to receive medical care.

Although Dougherty didn’t provide personal details about the alleged attacker, television images throughout the afternoon had shown two police officers escorting a detainee who was handcuffed, in underwear and with a bloody leg.

The suspect was limping but was able to walk on his own.

Neither the prosecutor nor Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold wanted to speculate on the possible motives for the attack, nor did they establish any relationship between the attacker and the supermarket.

“Everything has a limit”

Democrat Joe Neguse, who represents Boulder in Congress, said in a statement that “everything has its limits” by advocating for rules restricting access to guns.

“21 years ago, as a young student in Douglas County, I joined many Colorados crying for the victims of the horrific slaughter at Columbine High School, 10 minutes from high school”, Neguse recalled.

The truth is that the area has experienced several mass shootings, such as Columbine High, which with 13 deaths was the largest in a high school at the time; or that of the cinema in Aurora in 2012, which left 12 murdered during the broadcast of a Batman movie.

Shootings resurface a year later

After more than a year – which has coincided with the pandemic – without major shootings in the United States, the one in Boulder is the second in just six days after the attacks on Asian massage parlors last week in Atlanta, which left eight dead.

The one in Boulder left ten and became the largest mass shooting in the United States since August 2019, when a gunman killed 23 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. (March 23, 2021, EFE / PracticaEspañol)
