Tokyo / North Korea has committed to denuclearize and the US has offered the North Korean regime “security guarantees” at the first summit in history between the two countries.

After more than four hours of meetings, US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have signed a joint declaration in which they pledge to cooperate to develop new relations and promote “peace, prosperity and safety”.

The two countries will seek to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean peninsula, after 70 years of confrontation since the Korean War, a civil conflict that ended in 1953 with the signing of an armistice never replaced by a peace treaty.

In relation to this conflict, Washington and Pyongyang have agreed to recover the remains of prisoners and disappeared in combat and the repatriation of the remains already identified.

President Trump has appreciated the outcome of the meeting, and although he acknowledged that the complete disarmament of North Korea will take a long time, he is convinced of the marshal’s commitment to denuclearization.

Despite this, the tenant of the White House said that the US it will not lift the sanctions that weigh on the North until they can prove that their nuclear weapons are not effective.

What he did announce was his intention to suspend the military exercises that Washington and Seoul have been holding for years in South Korea and which he described as “provocative” and that were close to truncating the celebration of the historic summit with Kim.
