KING TALKS ABOUT CATALONIA: THE CONSTITUTION WILL PREVAIL OVER ANY BREAK

King of Spain has guaranteed today that the Constitution “will prevail over any break” of “coexistence in democracy” and that “the rights that belong to all Spaniards will be preserved” against “those who are outside the constitutional and statutory legality “.

“Let me begin my words referring to the situation we are living in Catalonia,” was the form chosen by the King to start this message, in the closing speech in the Cathedral of Cuenca (Spain) of the ceremony of delivery of the National Culture Awards 2016, accompanied by Ms. Letizia.

It was the first public intervention of the King after the Catalan Parliament passed the referendum law in order to support the vote on independence announced by the Generalitat on October 1.

The “democratic coexistence” achieved in Spain “after many sacrifices” and “thanks to the generosity of all” is only possible “if the laws that regulate and organize it are met and fulfilled by citizens and institutions; if the rights and freedoms of citizens are protected and respected by the public authorities”, said Felipe VI in his speech.

“Therefore, before those who are outside the constitutional and statutory legality and fracture society, I am sure that the rights that belong to all Spaniards will be preserved and that the freedoms of all citizens will be guaranteed and protected,” he has continued.

The King has argued: culture needs freedom to express itself, “a freedom that cost the Spaniards a lot to get – you know it well – and that made possible our common desire to live in democracy.”

“And that coexistence, in a constitutional democracy like ours, is only possible if the laws that regulate and organize it are met and fulfilled by citizens and by institutions,” insisted the head of state. (September 13, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
