Life imprisonment for the “Butcher of the Balkans”

The Hague / United Nations Court has reviewed and sentenced to life imprisonment the conviction of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. The Hague has judged him in the last decade for his responsibility in the crimes committed in the Bosnian war between 1992 and 1995.

The presiding judge of the Court of Appeal has acknowledged that the first 40-year prison sentence “inadequately reflected the extraordinary seriousness of Karadzic’s responsibility in the commission of the crimes”.

Although Karadzic was already tried and convicted, both the prosecution and his lawyers had appealed the judgment in the first instance.

The former president of the Republika Srpska had requested the repetition of the trial for alleged “errors of law”, but the judges have rejected all their arguments.

The magistrates confirmed their culpability for the genocide of Srebrenica as well as five crimes against humanity and four war crimes, including murder, terror, illegal attacks on civilians and hostage-taking. (March 20, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
