Belgrade / The life sentence handed down against Bosnian Serb former military commander Ratko Mladic for genocide and crimes against humanity has sown more discord in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The families of the victims and Muslim survivors celebrated the sentence with tears of joy because the most responsible person for the crimes has been condemned.
For their part, the Bosnian Serbs lamented that who, they consider a “hero”, have condemned.
Mladic was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) for genocide committed by Bosnian Serb troops under his command in Srebrenica, where some 8,000 Muslims were killed in July 1995 and for several other crimes in the Bosnian war 22 years ago.
The victims of Mladic from other parts of Bosnia, where the massacres were committed as in the northern Prijedor, consider that the qualification of ‘genocide’ should not have been limited only to Srebrenica.
The vision of the Bosnian Serbs is very different, among whom many recognize that a serious crime was committed in Srebrenica, but they do not consider it a genocide. For them, Mladic is a hero who defended his people.
The president of the Bosnian Serb, Milorad Dodik, considered that people like Mladic “are not judged by a court, but history.”
In the town of Bratunac, signs of support for Mladic have appeared on the streets with the slogan “You are our hero”.
There is a perception among Serbs and Bosnian Serbs that they have been treated badly by sentences and the crimes against their civilian population have not been punished to the same extent. They consider the attitude towards the Serbs as unjust and unequal.
In Serbia, in a reaction to Mladic’s condemnation, the country’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, called for “looking to the future” to achieve stability and peace in the Balkans for the development of the region.
