Long-lost Velazquez painting sells for $3 mn

Londres /Diego Velazquez’s recently rediscovered portrait of the sister-in-law and reputed lover of a 17th-century pope sold for 2.4 million pounds ($3 million) at auction here Wednesday.

The Spaniard’s rendering of Donna Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilj was one of the highlights of a sale of Old Masters at Sotheby’s London, along with Spanish artist Jose de Ribera’s “Chica con Pandereta” (Girl with Tambourine), which fetched a price of 5.7 million pounds ($7.1 million).

Olimpia Maidalchini (1591-1657) married a man from a wealthy family whose brother went on to become Pope Innocent X.

Whether or not she was actually Innocent’s lover, contemporary accounts show that she exercised enormous influence over the pontiff, to the point that some in the Vatican referred to Olimpia as “papessa” (lady pope).

She controlled access to the pope, who bestowed on her the title of Princess of San Martini.

Olimpia Maidalchini was the only woman who sat for Velazquez during his 1649-1650 sojourn in Rome, when he created recognized masterpieces such as his portrait of Innocent X.

The painting was among the treasures held by Don Gaspar Mendez de Haro y Guzman, 7th Marques del Carpio, one of Italy’s foremost art collectors in the Baroque era.

But the last record of the Olimpia portrait dates from 1724, when it belonged to Cardinal Pompeo Aldrovandi, and it sank from sight until 1986, when a collector brought it to Sotheby’s Amsterdam, where it was sold as being of the “anonymous Dutch school.”

In time, however, the work drew the attention of specialists who delved into the subject and ultimately confirmed that it was Velazquez’s depiction of Olimpia Maidalchini Pamphilj.

“The portrait captures the intimidating figure of Donna Maidalchini, serious and foreboding, a woman at the height of her power,” Sotheby’s said.

In her book, “Mistress of the Vatican: The True Story of Olimpia Maidalchini: The Secret Female Pope,” writer Eleanor Herman described her subject as a “rock star” of the Baroque era and the most powerful woman of her time. (July 3, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
