Guadalajara (Mexico) / The series “Los disparates” by Francisco de Goya, one of the least known works that the Spanish painter executed before dying, is exhibited at the Museum of Arts (Musa) of the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.
The exhibition, inaugurated today in this capital, focuses on 18 original sheets made with the techniques of etching, aquatint and drypoint, which were extracted from the “Los Disparates” folder and printed from the sheets found in the Quinta del Sordo, which was the residence of Francisco de Goya in Madrid during his last years in Spain prior to the French exile.
The engravings were printed from the plates made by the artist dated between 1815 and 1819 and correspond to the series also made up of the folders “Los Caprichos” and “Desastres de la guerra”.
The pieces show a critical Goya, among other issues, with the aristocracy, marriage for convenience or cruelty with mournful scenes in which it is common to find fantastic and gigantic beings living together with men and women alike.
Hilario Galguera, owner of the collection and admirer of the Spanish artist, told Efe that this series can be interpreted in different ways, since it referse to universal themes such as morality, loyalty or cruelty.
“This qualification of universal is demonstrated by this work, anyone can identify with any of the elements we see there from the formal, historical, ethical, political, erotic, sexual, oneiric or psychological point of view in that sense” said the collector.
In addition to the 18 pieces found in the Quinta del Sordo, four more prints were later found in Paris, which is why it is said to be an “unfinished” folder. These four plates are currently exhibited in the Louvre Museum, in France.
The exhibition has an interactive section in which attendees can compare the pieces that integrate it with some of the paintings that Goya made on request throughout his career.
