Porto Alegre / Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva went on a real walkabout in Porto Alegre (Brazil) before a militancy delivered and on the eve of the decisive corruption trial he will face this Wednesday in the same city in southern Brazil.
Lula said he was “calm” and promised that “whatever the outcome” he will continue his fight in the streets so that Brazilians have “respect and dignity” in the country.
The concentration was attended by more than 70,000 people, according to the organizers, and these travelled two kilometers to a space where their supporters held a vigil to support their leader.
A few meters away, the three magistrates that make up the eighth chamber of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region (TRF4) will decide whether to maintain, modify or cancel the sentence to nine and a half years of prison that the former president received in the first instance for corruption passive and money laundering.
In the case, one of the seven opened against him, mostly on suspicion of corruption, the charismatic leader is accused of having received from the construction company OAS an apartment in the São Paulo resort of Guarujá in exchange for favoring this company in contracts with the oil company Petrobras.
Lula avoided talking directly about this process and, in an electoral tone, rescued the “dreams” – he said – that he built during his two terms and that allowed to create a “big Brazil”.
The trial is presented as decisive for the project of Lula, who appears as an outstanding leader in all the polls ahead of the presidential elections next October, because if he remains worthwhile his candidacy could be disqualified, although the last word would be Justice electoral.
That scenario is not foreseen either by his party or by his militancy, which he proudly wore the stamped face of his leader in shirts, stickers and badges mixed with other left symbols such as the image of Ernesto “Che” Guevara. (January 24, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
