Paris / The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, received Mamoudou Gassama as a hero and he promised the French nationality to the undocumented Malian who, in Paris, saved the life of a four-year-old boy who hung from a balcony suspended in the void, after climb four floors by the facade of the building.
Baptized as “Spiderman” by the French press, Gassama took just half a minute to climb the facade of the building on Saturday and reach the small boy, which had been suspended in a void, hanging from a balcony.
“Well done,” Macron told him today at the meeting they held at the Elysée after the video in which Gassama is seen saving the child would have gone viral on the internet.
Gassama monopolizes the national news since Saturday came to the rescue of that child without more help than the strength of his arms, shortly before 20.00 local time (18.00 GMT).
“I did not think of anything, I went straight up,” the young man told Macron today, who also gave him a medal and a certificate of “bravery and dedication”, and assured him that all his papers will be regularized.
In a video widely disseminated on social networks, he can be seen climbing the balconies and grabbing the child, whom a neighbor next door tried to help without success.
On the street, some citizens had called the police, but Gassama arrived before the agents.
His gesture led many Internet users to claim their nationalization and the government spokesman, Benjamin Griveaux, advanced on Sunday that the Executive was in favour of giving it to him.
“This act of immense courage, faithful to the values of solidarity of our Republic, should open him the doors of our national community,” he said on Twitter.
Gassama arrived in France last September and this Monday he showed up at the Elysée wearing jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, accompanied by his brother and his girlfriend, with whom he took some photos with his own cell phone at the entrance to the Palace.
The boy’s mother was not in Paris at the time of the events and the father, born in 1981 and without a judicial record, was arrested for leaving him unattended and will appear before the Prosecutor’s Office on Monday.
The French Presidency reported today that the young man, aged 22, will have French nationality and will be part of the civic service of the capital’s firefighters. (May 28, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
