MADRID LIMITS TO 50 PER CENT VEHICLE TRAFFIC BY POLLUTION

Madrid will be the first Spanish city that imposes alternate circulation of vehicles to combat pollution: tomorrow, only vehicles with odd number plates can circulate.

Never before, a Spanish city has been forced to adopt a measure of this magnitude.

Although, a year ago, on December of 2015, City Council of Oviedo (Asturias) chose to keep the access and exit of the city closed by traffic on the A-66 highway for almost two days.

Also in December and in the face of a sharp increase in pollution levels, Barcelona reduced the maximum speed to 90 kilometers per hour on all the fast roads in the metropolitan area of the city.

Only fifteen days ago, the Generalitat issued a notice recommending the use of public transport due to high pollution.

In February 2011, Valladolid recommended that drivers opt to voluntarily leave their car at home and use public transport.

It was also in this year when the Pontevedra city of Vigo adopted a series of provisions tending to regulate road traffic in places where a high concentration of NO2 particles was maintained.

All these measures that have sought to reduce pollution levels concentrated in cities have never gone so far as to prevent the circulation of 50 per cent of vehicles by their central almonds.
