MARION COTILLARD AND CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG, THE FRENCH GLAMOUR OPENS CANNES

The 70th Cannes Film Festival opens with a claim to French glamour, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two of its most international actresses, the protagonists of the opening film and the first red carpet.

Cannes has managed to play with the balance of author cinema and popular stars in its 70 years of history and has driven the career of great cult directors, but not forgetting the more frivolous side of fame and beauty that attracts many viewers.

In addition to fiercely defend the French cinema. And this year, in the year of its great anniversary, could not be less, so “Les fantômes d’Ismaël” the film that will give the starting signal to 12 intense days of cinema, meets all the requirements: it is French, by a director of cult -Arnaud Desplechin- and its protagonists radiates glamour.

Cotillard and Gainsbourg are joined by Louis Garrell and Mathieu Amalric, four of the best known names in French cinema, who will be in charge of opening the Cannes star parade.

After them they will land, as usual, some of Hollywood’s best-known faces. From the omnipresent Nicole Kidman -present in three films and a series in this edition- to Robert Pattison, to Julianne Moore, Elle Fanning, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Michelle Williams, Colin Farrell or Joaquin Phoenix.

Among the few Hispanics, Argentines Ricardo Darín and Dolores Fonzi and Chilean Paulina García, all in “La Cordillera”, with which Santiago Miter competes in the Certain Regard section, the same that hosts “The Daughters of April” by the Mexican Michel Franco, with the Spanish Emma Suárez like protagonist.

Also some names from successful television series, such as Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) or Dominic West (“The Affair”), protagonists of one of the films in the competition for the Palme d’Or, “The Square “, directed by the Swedish Ruben Östlund.

A competition whose awards will elucidate a jury presided over by Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodóvar, accompanied by Will Smith, Fan Bingbing, Jessica Chastain and Paolo Sorrentino.

It is the first time that films produced by a television platform and conceived to be exhibited only on the small screen compete for the Palme d’Or, a decision of Cannes that has generated enough protests by the National Federation of the French Cinemas.

And the ‘masterclass’ of the edition will come from the hand of the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón and the American Clint Eastwood, two essential appointments in which will be for 12 days the world headquarters of the cinema but also the most popular parties and advertising events, that will take to this city of the blue coast to faces like Cara Delevingne or Naomi Campbell.
