“MÁS FELIZ QUE UNAS CASTAÑUELAS (BE VERY MERRY)” (JUAN MAYORGA)

Madrid / The playwright and theater director Juan Mayorga (Madrid, 1965) is “más contento que unas castañuelas” ( to be very merry) or, as they say in Latin America, “saltando sobre una pata” for the news: he will occupy the M chair of the RAE, vacant since the death of Carlos Bousoño.

Juan Mayorga will enter into RAE “with joy, hope, humility and willingness to work,” he told EFE.

“Having as I have a passion for words, I will meet there with people who know more than me and with that same passion,” he added.

Mayorga was elected on the third ballot to occupy the “M” chair (capital letter m) in the Academy in front of the also philologist Dolores Corbella.

The new academic affirmed his first thought was for her companion of candidacy “a student of the language to which she endorsed a magnificent curriculum, she would have been a great academic and respect to those who have supported her”.

Mayorga celebrated the news with his parents, Alfredo and Teresa, his wife, Coté, and their children, Miguel Beatriz and Raquel, “eating some tapas in a bar”.

In reference to his inagural speech in the RAE which it must be read to take office, according to the statutes and the rules of the Academy, Mayorga said he has begun to spin and think about the word ‘silence’.

“It is a beautiful, conflictive and extraordinary word. I have the intuition that through it I can do a meditation from philosophy and even from mathematics, it has always been very important in the theater and there is no more to remember Chekhov, Pinter or Becket. “

Mayorga, graduated in Philosophy by the UNED and in Mathematics by the UAM, directs the Chair of Performing Arts of the Carlos III University.

His work has been translated into 32 languages and represented in about 40 countries and has won the National Theater Award (2007) and the National Prize for Dramatic Literature (2013) for the dramaturgic production of thirty titles like “Himmelweg”, “El chico de la última fila”, “La tortuga de Darwin”, “La lengua en pedazos”, “Reykjavik” and “El cartógrafo”.
