May and Trump aim for a trade deal which causes controversy in UK

London / On Tuesday, the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, and the US President, Donald Trump, expressed their aspiration to negotiate an “ambitious” bilateral trade deal after the “Brexit”, as the culmination of the historic relationship that unites the two countries.

In a press conference at the end of a meeting between the two leaders, May said that she and the president hope to get “an ambitious agreement” when UK leaves the European Union (EU), in principle on October 31.

Trump agreed that this future pact, which would be possible only with the separation of the bloc, “has tremendous potential” and can expand “two or three times” the commercial exchange which the two countries currently have.

May and Trump met on the second day of the president’s three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, which began on Monday with a banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.

At the press conference, the Republican leader raised the controversy by saying that the future deal, much coveted by supporters of a hard “brexit”, could include the entry of US private capital into the British public health sector, something that is rejected by the most of the population and the political opposition.

Aware of misgivings in his country, May, who will leave office on June 7 due to her failure to negotiate the “Brexit”, pointed out that the eventual agreement “must be agreed by the two parties.”

Several candidates to succeed her as head of the Conservative Party and the Government rushed to ensure that, if they came to power, they would not consent to the sale or privatization of public health.

Iran, China and Mexico

In the last meeting with May at the head of the government, both leaders also discussed other issues, such as the crisis with Iran and the commercial war with China, in particular the US restrictions on the telecommunications company Huawei.

The president also referred to the tensions with Mexico, saying that “the most likely” is that on Monday the trade tariffs that he has announced to punish the Latin American country for its migration policies come into force.

The meeting between May and Trump coincided with a massive protest against his visit to the streets of London, which the president said “he didn’t see” and attributed to the “fake news” that in his opinion circulate about him.

After the events on Tuesday, which culminate with a dinner at the US embassy, Trump will participate in commemorations for the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings in the south of England on Wednesday. (June 4, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
