MEDITERRANEAN DIET TO COMBAT DEPRESSION

Mediterranean diet, known for improving cardiovascular health, reducing the risks of diabetes and increasing longevity, may also help combat severe depression, according to a study by an Australian university.

Consumption of large quantities of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereals such as wheat and rice, as well as moderate amounts of fish, milk products and wine, and more limited of red meat and poultry are part of the characteristics of the Mediterranean diet.

Two groups of adults who were suffering from depression were tested by a team of scientists from the Australian Deakin University for three months.

The members of the first group subjected to a social support treatment, while patients of the second to a Mediterranean diet, reports the local channel ABC.

Experts found that a third of those who were subjected to the Mediterranean diet recorded significant improvements in their mood and symptoms of depression, according to this study published in the international journal BMC Medicine.

In the group of those who subjected to social support treatments, only eight percent of patients reported improvement in symptoms, the source added.

“We already knew that diet has a powerful impact on the biological aspects of our body that affect the risks of depression,” Felice Jacka, director of the Deakin University’s Center for Food and Mood, said.

“Immune system, brain plasticity and gut microbiota seem to be central not only to our physical but also mental health,” Jacka added.

Researchers stress the need to design better diets for patients, but emphasized that they should not replace traditional treatments such as consultations with therapists and medications to treat severe depression.
