Madrid / Meliá Hotels International has lost more than 3 million euros due to the political instability in Catalonia, after one month of October, which was described as “disastrous and disastrous” by its vice president and Managing director, Gabriel Escarrer.
Escarrer has indicated to the journalists, within the framework of the thirty-eighth edition of Fitur, that the situation was disastrous immediately after independence referendum on October 1.
He also said that “something improved” in certain sectors such as business tourism as a result of the application of Article 155.
However, in certain segments such as congresses, conventions and incentives, where there is a large international component, with customers coming mainly from the North American, German and British markets, “unfortunately, there is no visibility,” he lamented.
Escarrer explained group planning takes place several months in advance and “it is true that until there is a certain stability in the area, there is no visibility”.
On the contrary, the incidence of ‘brexit’ (the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union), “thank God, it has been minimal,” he stressed.
The statements of the Managing Director of the hotel chain coincided with the constitution of the Bureau of the Parliament of Catalonia today, in which the pro-independence parties renewed an absolute majority, obtaining the Presidency of the Chamber, a Vice Presidency and two secretaries.
Meliá Hotels International is one of the largest holiday hotel companies in the world, leader in the Spanish market, both in leisure and business.
The chain has more than 370 hotels distributed in 43 countries on 4 continents, marketed under the following brands: Gran Meliá, Meliá, Paradisus Resorts, ME by Meliá, Innside by Meliá, TRYP by Wyndham, Sol Hotels and Club Meliá, as reported in its website.
