Mice sent to space retain fertility, says study

Tokyo / Mice sent to space for 35 days did not suffer any alterations in their reproductive capacities, according to a study by Japanese researchers.

The research, a first of its kind, was carried out to determine the impact on the fertility of human beings who travel to space for a longer duration, according to the researchers from Osaka University.

The findings were published by the university and the British online journal Scientific Reports.

The researchers sent a dozen mice at a module on the International Space Station, where the rodents stayed for 35 days before returning to Earth.

They were examined for the analysis on the biological effects of gravity, radiation and the stress from travel into space on their reproductive functions.

The study concluded that “short-term stays in outer space do not cause overt defects in the physiological function of male reproductive organs, sperm function, and offspring viability”.

The researchers, however, added that additional analysis to study the long-term effects of the space environment on the reproductive capabilities of the mammals was necessary, especially of factors such as changes in gravity and space radiation.

The experts also emphasized on the need of continuous advancement in research in this field “to prevent undesirable effects” on human health, given the growing numbers of astronauts sent to space amid numerous upcoming projects to promote tourism in the outer world.
