MIQUEL BARCELÓ, PAINTER (the fabrics)

The voice of painter from Mallorca Miquel Barceló, who talks about the exhibition ‘Vivarium’. For twenty years, Francisca Artigues, Miquel Barceló’s mother, has embroidered the Mallorcan painter’s drawings on tablecloths, quilts, curtains or napkins, which take on another dimension in the exhibition “Vivarium”, where the “thread” that unites them, beyond the familiar side, is exposed.

“Each one of these embroideries had a function and they were all for someone, for a specific table or a specific bed, we did not even think they were works of art, but I think it’s good to teach them with this humility, without further pretensions”, Barceló emphasized during the presentation of the exhibition, which will remain in the Botanical Garden until January 6.

Next to him is his mother, excited to see how her hours of work dedicated to decorating functional objects with Mallorcan knitting are now understood as an artistic process: “It was always fun and different, but hard,” she confesses.

Listen MP3 (September 21, 2018):

Read translation of the transcription:

“Well, and the fact that it’s cloth and these aren’t, they are not… lithographs or drawings or watercolors, but… they are fabrics that are wrinkled, and they are almost never flat. That’s. Yes. And all different, right? Because you see, the fabrics are usually all different… My mother chooses them according to what function… if it is for some curtains or for some tablecloths she chooses a different material.”
