Navalni supporters in Russia keep the pulse on Putin

Moscow / Supporters of Alexei Navalni kept the pulse of President Vladimir Putin in protests across Russia to demand the release of the opposition leader and express his outrage at the economic and social situation in the country.

The marches in support of Navalni took place in more than 140 cities in the country, from Vladivostok in the Far East, to Novosibirsk in Siberia, Yekaterinburg in the Urals, Saint Petersburg on the Baltic Sea or the center of power, in Moscow.

All attempts by the Russian authorities to block access to the assembly points with fences, police cordons and the closure of subway stations were in vain, as tens of thousands of Russians returned to protest.

New scenes of arrests involving excessive use of force were seen across the country, despite the peaceful nature of the protests. Several people were also injured.

According to the OVD-Info portal, which monitors the arrests, more than 4,400 people were arrested across the country, including Navalni’s wife, Yulia.

The opposition leader is in preventive detention, accused of breaking the terms of a suspended prison sentence while he was recovering in Germany from the poisoning he suffered last year on Putin’s orders, according to the complaint.
